THE AMAZON IS ON FIRE

The Amazon forest is to the planet, what lungs are to the human body. Providing over 20% of the worlds oxygen supply, this forest provides an immense amount of oxygen needed for our survival. Without it trees filtering the air, humans would be extinct. It’s that deep.

So, the fact that the Amazon rainforest has been on fire for 3 weeks is more than alarming. This comes soon after the Waorani people of Pastaza won a landmark court case against the Ecuadorian government. This case halted the sale of half a million acres of sacred ancestral Amazonian lands to oil companies. Therefore, correlation between the victory of this case and the fire in the Amazon is not farfetched. Especially with the history of violence towards environmental activists in the region.

The amazon has been under threat of deforestation due mainly to man made causes for decades. Forests are being burned down everyday (an average of 3 football fields per minute) to make room for animals to be turned into livestock and sold for meat. This is why it is said that the meat industry is the number one cause of environmental destruction.

Global warming and climate change accelerated by human activities also play a role in the destruction of the Amazon. Our day to day activities that encourage environmental destruction all have consequences.

One person cannot do everything. But EVERYONE can do SOMETHING. It’s starts with you. Today.

Put that chicken sandwich down.
