The Plastic Continent

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of the five offshore plastic accumulation zones in the world’s oceans. This accumulation of trash is nicknamed as the plastic continent because it is made of hundreds of millions of tons of plastics. The garbage patch is twice the surface area of the United States!

It has accumulated some of the plastic pollutions in the ocean and is currently floating around between Hawaii and California. An estimated 1.15 to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic are entering the ocean each year from rivers.

How can we help?
Besides trying to clean up this mess, recycling would help a great deal by deterring would-be waste away from the ocean. Also, ridding our lives of one time use plastics can also help a great deal being that most of the plastics end up in our precious ocean.
